Nutrimix Supports Mathematical Reasoning Initiative for SEA Students

Mathematics remains one of the most challenging subjects in the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA). To address this, a new collaborative initiative is strengthening students’ reasoning and problem-solving skills across Trinidad and Tobago.

Recent SEA data reveal that while many students can perform basic calculations, a significant number struggle with reasoning-based questions that require explanation, justification, and application of concepts. In response, the Ministry of Education introduced targeted professional development workshops for Standard 5 teachers in priority schools.

Facilitated by mathematics educators Dr Shereen Khan and Dr Fayad Ali, the workshops focused on practical classroom strategies for teaching and assessing mathematical reasoning. Teachers engaged with authentic student work, applied scoring rubrics, and explored techniques to help students communicate their thinking more effectively.

Recognising the need for critical learning resources, Nutrimix partnered in this initiative by providing FasPass Maths SEA practice booklets to students in 58 priority schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago, reaching approximately 700 students. Nutrimix also extended its support to sponsor a dedicated workshop in Tobago for Standard 5 teachers.

The authentic student work generated from these resources was used during the workshops, enabling teachers to analyse diverse reasoning strategies and reflect on their classroom practices.

Through this partnership, Nutrimix is helping to strengthen mathematical foundations, improve SEA readiness, and nurture critical thinking skills that extend beyond the classroom. This initiative underscores the power of collaboration between educators and corporate partners in creating lasting educational impact by investing in both teachers and students.

Aligned with this vision, Nutrimix has gifted stationery packs to all SEA students since 2022, further demonstrating its commitment to supporting education nationwide.
